1/22/07 Chatfield SP S Assist to Alpine Rescue Team. Vehicle belonging to a missing adult male was located in the parking lot for the Chatfield State Park and Waterton Canyon trailheads.  He had last been seen two days before, when he left home to go snowshoeing. Subject was located deceased in the park. Also participating were state park rangers. 14
1/28/07 Rampart Range R Two adults on snowmobiles called 911 to report they were stuck and had become exhausted trying to get the machines out.  Team members responded to Rampart Range Road and Highway 67 and to Jackson Creek Road at the Forest Service gate. Parties were able to dig out one snowmobile and make it to Rampart Range Road and Highway 67, OK, just as team members were arriving. 15

Rampart Range

S

Jackson Creek Road and Forest Service gate.  Abandoned car belonging to a 53 YO woman, reported missing from Castle Rock 2 days earlier, was found there.  She was located on the third day of the search deceased.  Search involved  83 people.  Assisting were family members, Arapahoe Rescue Patrol, El Paso County SAR humans and dogs, DCSO, Castle Rock PD, Douglas County park rangers, Colorado Division of Wildlife officers, Jackson 105 FD, Larkspur FD, Search and Rescue Dogs of Colorado and helicopters from Aircam National Helicopter Service, Channel 4 and Channel 7.  Meals provided by the Salvation Army.

Highlands Ranch

S

78 YO man with Alzheimer's was missing from home.  His family searched for a couple of hours before calling 911.Search was suspended the next day and turned over to DCSO investigators based on lack of physical clues, but information from several witnesses suggesting he may have left the area.  Subject was found later in the week, at the Veteran's Hospital in San Diego, California.

Two people who had spent the night in their stuck 4WD called 911 for assistance. Due to the recovery in Castlewood Canyon, the mission was turned over to Teller County SAR. They located the vehicle and occupants OK on a Forest Service road in Teller County.

No one at the scene of an auto accident with a car in a ravine.  The driver was picked up OK by a passerby, but deputies stopped the car leaving the area.

Vehicle became stuck on Rampart Range Road and the occupants spent the night with the vehicle. The next morning they walked to cell phone coverage and called 911.  ATVs and 4WD trucks were able to reach the subjects, who were OK.

Assist to Jackson 105 FD. Ill person in Shamballah needed medical transport. Due to snow, an ambulance was unable to get to the scene.  Party transported out by ATV.

Juvenile female had gone for walk and not returned home.  She returned home OK as the team was responding.

Custer County

R

Assist to Custer County SAR. 38 YO man took a 200 foot fall on Humboldt Peak at the 12,600 ft level.  This was a CSRB mutual aid call. Also assisting were Alpine Rescue Team, El Paso County SAR, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, Teller County SAR and Western State SAR.  A two thousand foot technical evacuation got the subject to a Flight for Life helicopter. The man later died in the hospital.

Driver missing from a car off Highway 83 that was destroyed by fire. He was located trying to leave the area, OK, by a deputy. Team was staging when the driver was located.

13 YO male ran into a tree on his ATV, resulting in minor injuries. Litter evacuation to the ambulance. Also participating were West Douglas FD and South Metro FD.

Adult male was overdue from an ATV ride. The reporting party's 911 call went to Park County dispatch, which forwarded the call to El Paso County dispatch. El Paso County SAR determined the subject was missing from a campground in Douglas County and notified DCSAR. Rider returned OK during coordinator briefing.

Dirt biker with broken leg on Trail 677 required a litter evacuation. Assisted by Arapahoe Rescue Patrol, West Douglas FD, South Metro FD. Subject was flown to the hospital by Air Life helicopter.

Castlewood Canyon SP

R

Four teenage males became stranded in the canyon due to rapidly rising water in Cherry Creek.  Parties were able to self rescue OK with guidance.  Also participating were state park rangers, Douglas County park rangers, Douglas County Emergency Management, DCSO, Franktown FD, Parker FD Swift Water Rescue Team, South Metro FD Dive Rescue Team and the Channel 4 helicopter.

Three horseback riders became trapped when a tree fell and blocked the Indian Creek Trail.  In addition to calling 911, they called other horseback riders. These riders took a chainsaw to clear the trail. All riders got out on their own OK. Assisted by DCSO deputy and USFS personnel.

Injured dirt bike rider on Trail 673. Litter evacuation to the trailhead at Sprucewood. Also participating were West Douglas FD, South Metro FD and a DCSO deputy. Subject was flown to the hospital by an Air Life helicopter.

Assist to Custer County SAR..  67 YO man found deceased after an apparent fall on the Crestone Needle.  Two DCSAR members who were climbing on their own in the area assisted with the recovery. Also participating were Saguache County SAR and an Air Life helicopter.

Assist to Alpine Rescue Team. They requested DCSAR and Rocky Mountain Rescue Group be on standby to assist with an ongoing incident on Mt. Bierstadt or to cover any other calls during this incident. Assistance wasn't required.

Assist to Jackson 105 FD. Disabled driver of a vehicle that went over an embankment was uninjured, but a technical uphaul was required to bring him back up to the road. Also participating were Arapahoe Rescue Patrol and Castle Rock FD.

Female rider was injured in a fall from a bicycle.  The team was training in the area and responded. West Metro FD reached the patient and transported her to the hospital without DCSAR assistance.

Male teen ran into the forest from a party when a deputy arrived to check it out. When the teen did not return later, DCSAR was requested for a search. The teen later called a friend at the scene from home, OK. He had hitched a ride out of the area.

Unroped climber fell about 20 feet on the Cave route, landing at the bottom.  DCSAR assisted Franktown FD with a litter evacuation to the ambulance. Subject was flown to the hospital by an Air Life helicopter.

29 YO male bicyclist ran out of daylight and drinking water on the Indian Creek Trail loop. He called his wife who called 911. He was located OK and rode out on his own, with an ATV lighting the trail.

17 YO male walked away from his rural home after an argument, after dark.  He was located OK in Castle Rock. Also participating were DCSO and Castle Rock PD.

Assist to Custer County SAR. 29 YO developmentally disabled man became separated from his helper on a hike on Humboldt Peak. The subject took a wrong turn and was located OK in a drainage on the other side of the mountain. Also participating were Alamosa Volunteer SAR and a National Guard helicopter.

Assist to Teller County SAR. 30 YO and 54 YO males overdue from a fishing trip. They took a wrong turn and ended up one canyon over from where they were supposed to be. They were spotted by a National Guard helicopter crew and transported back OK by ground SAR personnel. This was a CSRB mutual aid call and other teams were involved.

A resident of the area reported a missing 7 YO child to Douglas County Schools Security. Given the lack of details and sketchy information, DCSO canceled DCSAR.

Assist to Larimer County SAR. A couple was three days overdue from a hike in Rocky Mountain National Park. Their car was located at a park trailhead. Smoke from their campfire outside the park was spotted by a Civil Air Patrol aircrew and a Larimer County SAR team was directed into the area. The couple were OK. This was a CSRB mutual aid call. Also participating were Arapahoe Rescue Patrol, El Paso County SAR, Front Range Rescue Dogs, Search and Rescue Dogs of Colorado and Civil Air Patrol.

Missing adult male, possibly suicidal. Given the lack of clues, DCSAR was put on standby only. Subject was found OK later that morning.

Injured adult male bicyclist on the Indian Creek Trail.  He had gone over the handlebars and was complaining of neck and back pain. Litter evacuation to an Air Life helicopter which transported him to the hospital.  Also participating was West Metro FD.

Fremont County

S

Assist to Fremont County SAR. 63 YO man with advanced Alzheimer's did not return to his rural home after leaving on an ATV with his two dogs. Family members found the overturned ATV, but no sign of the subject or dogs. Search was suspended after a week, having found no evidence of the subject or dogs. Hunters located the subject deceased, with the two dogs at his side, alive, almost three weeks later. They were located about 7 air miles from where the ATV had been found. This was a statewide CSRB mutual aid callout. 16 SAR teams, fixed wing aircraft from the Civil Air Patrol and helicopters from the National Guard were involved.

Car belonging to a 44 YO woman was illegally parked along the South Platte River. Evidence in the car suggested she may have been suicidal. The search began at night. Her body was located in the river, 1.4 miles downstream from the car the next morning. Assisted in the search by two dog teams from El Paso County SAR.

Assist to Vail Mountain Rescue Group. Overdue hiker on Mount of the Holy Cross. Subject was located exhausted and frostbitten after spending two nights out. This was a CSRB mutual aid callout involving other teams.

Rampart Range

S

Two adults and a 2 YO child were stuck in their 4WD truck somewhere off Rampart Range Road. Through spotty cell phone conversations with one of them, the search area was narrowed to the southern end of the road. Searchers were in 4WD trucks, dirt bikes, ATVs and on foot. The group, with a total of five people, was located, along with the truck, 2.9 miles from the road on a motorcycle trail, almost 14 air miles from their last known position. They were OK, having spent two nights with the stuck truck in below freezing weather. Assisted by a DCSO deputy and a USFS law enforcement officer. Douglas County park rangers with ATVs were enroute, and the helicopters from Channels 4 and 7 were preparing to launch when the group was located.

Adult male was uninjured after rolling his ATV, but the ATV was unridable, several miles from the trailhead. He called his wife to say he was walking out. She called 911. It was now after dark. A DCSO deputy in a 4WD truck was able to reach the subject, who was OK, while the team was enroute.
